Rat-type creatures in Magic: the Gathering are rodents associated with disease and vermin, which is why they are commonly in black and often have associated keywords like Deathtouch, Toxic, or Infect. They were already present in Alpha in the form of Plague Rats, but Wilds of Eldraine was the first set to have Rat Typal as a draft archetype.
