God-type creatures in Magic: the Gathering directly reference omniscient religious figures. The creature type was introduced in 2013 with the Theros block. The originals like Erebos, God of the Dead and Nylea, God of the Hunt came in the form of indestructible legendary enchantment creatures and interacted with the devotion mechanic. Many new iterations of the concept were printed since, like the Return to Theros and or Both Amonketh God Cycles.
